Rohan Blacker and Pat Reeves founded a business in 1997 called Deliverance, which we were fortunate enough to be involved in helping them brand, design and market. We became good friends and they kindly invited us to work with them in setting up sofa.com. Since its launch, sofa.com has revolutionised the furniture retail category. Everyone said they were mad to think that people would buy posh, good value sofas online. Seems those sceptics were wrong! We started off by positioning the brand around their vision, which was to make buying a stylish, well made, quality sofa super easy, hassle free, affordable and fun. We created a distinctive, instantly recognisable identity with a tone of voice that summed up the brand’s approach. When it came to creating awareness we used two methods. Firstly, we created interruptive photography that literally made you take a second look. Sofas and hot air balloons, sofas and race horses, sofas up trees all beautifully shot as fashion items rather than dull interiors. Once people saw this they would visit the website and be greeted by simple images that they could colour up in any fabric they liked using our clever online sofa.com tools. Since the launch, the business has grown to around a 20 million turnover and has launched in New York and the Netherlands. It’s growing like topsy and has become the benchmark in the market. We’re proud to be part of creating a game changing challenger brand. We are also lucky enough to be stakeholders in sofa.com thanks to Pat and Rohan’s belief in us at the outset.
