English wine has come of age. Its quality can confidently stand up to the finest in the world. So when Trevor Clough and his partner Jason Humphries came through our door with an idea to produce England’s first négociant sparkling wine and were kind enough to open several bottles of their fantastic product for us to try, it seemed rude not to rise to the challenge of creating a brand that set about rewriting the rules of an industry which, although nascent, can be just a bit set in its ways. We really wanted to capture the spirit of what it means to be English – that essential cocktail of confidence, creativity and flair that characterises our national identity. Then once we’d found the story of the extraordinary Sir Kenelm Digby, the 17th-century philosopher, diplomat, author and pirate, also known as ‘the father of the modern wine bottle’… well, the job, as they say, was a good ‘un. Cheers!
